Mars – Blue Moon – Chapter 1

June 8th, 2009

Introduction

This whole Mars thing… it really just started off as a crazy idea. You know how it is, you’re watching TV, and there’s NASA showing off with its latest Rover, a whole room full of Science Geeks wearing 3D glasses, watching the video feed… from a different planet. I bought my own 3D glasses that day, took a couple days to get them, but from then on, I Was HOOKED!

Realistically, Mars isn’t that different from some places I’ve lived, sandy, desolate, hot, windy. Maybe that’s why I could imagine being there, going there, kicking the dust around with my boots. I was stationed at Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, for 3 years. That’s in the Mojave Desert part of California, in case you’re wondering. Not in China. Heck, its not even a lake anymore, its a dry lake. Funny place for a Navy Base, don’t you think? No water?

I’ve probably always been a bit of a whack job. I keep getting these crazy ideas, and rather than just shugging them off, I’d spend the rest of the afternoon exploring why everyone else thought they were so crazy. As a kid, we think we really can fly, right? Maybe that’s why our parents try so hard to plant the seed of “reality” in our noggins. They don’t want to be those parents, you know, the ones on TV trying to explain why their sons jumped off the barn with wings made from duct tape and cardboard boxes… again!

The way I see it, I’m thinking most inventors, explorers, and certainly at least a few other whack jobs are like me. Some how, we managed to ignore that voice of reason, to protect the curious child long enough, to get actually good at asking more questions. Ask the right question, and the one after that, and the one after that… and you uncover something. It may not be what you were looking for, but dang it, is it ever cool when it leads to something shiny you didn’t even dare hope to find!

I started having The Dream, not that people were going to Mars, but that I was going to Mars. At first it was vague, just glimpses. I had been spending hours online, looking at the pictures, it felt like I was there. So, then at nights, in my dreams, it was like I was there. It was… Real… Then in the mornings, when I woke up, I was kind of disappointed. But the feeling of being there was strong. So then I thought, how can I build that feeling into a reality?”

Thoughts Become Things, right? Just ask Mike Dooley! Go ahead, look him up. I’ll wait. Yeah, that guy, from The Secret. Cool…

So, its always been kind of a hobby of mine. I’ve always liked taking a strange problem, maybe something impossible, and putting in the time to solve it, as an exercise in just solving problems. Like when I was stationed on Guam, one night on a 8 hour “phone watch” my shipmate and I figured out how to make a Solar Powered Submarine that we could use to drive home in. From Guam, back to the US.

We managed to each use up most of a legal pad, and a pot of coffee, and the 8 hour watch just flew by! Not very practical, but between the two of us, we figured we’d solved the major issues at hand! So going to Mars will be like that, only longer, and a bit more complicated. But maybe not a lot more complicated right?

So begins my journey!

Constellation Space Suit

April 28th, 2009

Talking about the design of NASA’s new space suit, will have modular components so they can use one base suit for launch, flight, and Lunar missions.

Paragon has received authorization to begin work on NASA’s Constellation Space Suit System (CSSS). Paragon is beginning this work on the first major space suit redesign in over 40 years as part of a team led by Oceaneering International. Paragon has key responsibilities in the design and manufacture of the suit’s life support and thermal control system. The first suits will support the debut flight of the new Orion spaceship that Paragon is also working on, currently planned to launch in 2015. With modifications, the suit will go on to be used exploring the surface of the Moon and Mars. Also watch this episode: Paragon Dive System. Growing Plants on the Moon

April 23rd, 2009

Wow, they have a flowering plant that can grow from seed to seed in 14 days. Wonder if it tastes good? :) With crop rotation in your orbiting green house, and a bit of planning, this could work!

What does it take to grow plants on the Moon? Paragon Space Development Corporation CEO Taber MacCallum answers that question from the 25th International Space Symposium. Growing the first plant on another world has enormous symbolic importance as well as important scientific research value for creating self contained lunar outposts and eventual settlements. In addition to leading the design of biological payloads, Paragon’s responsibilities on the Odyssey Moon team include robotic lunar lander design support and the lander’s thermal control system. Also watch this episode: Lunar Oasis: Greenhouse on the Moon. For more information, go to: Paragon Space Development Corporation.

Lunar Oasis: Greenhouse on the Moon

April 22nd, 2009

The first Moon flower will become a reality when private lunar expedition partners Odyssey Moon and Paragon Space Development Corporation deliver a biological greenhouse to the lunar surface. Google Lunar X PRIZE contender Odyssey Moon partnered with Paragon, a Tucson-based firm and manufacturer of key components for NASA’s Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle. The lunar plant will be another space biology first for Paragon, having bred the first animals through complete life cycles in space, and grown the first aquatic plant in space. For more information, go to: Paragon Space Development Corporation.

MoonOne Robotic Lunar Lander

April 21st, 2009

MoonOne Robotic Lunar Lander

Odyssey Moon’s partnership with NASA will allow them to develop the “MoonOne” (M-1) lunar lander based on the Common Spacecraft Bus (CSB) developed at the NASA Ames Research Center. The Hover Test Vehicle used for ground testing of the CSB is demonstrating that small teams and rapid prototyping can lead to some game changing innovations. Odyssey Moon is the first of a series of mission opportunities designed to enable low cost, rapid, and frequent access to the Moon for government, academic and commercial customers. I thought it would be good reference material to start making note of how NASA is setting up the ISS, there are plenty of clips up on YouTube already, so that saves some time!

Mars Blogs – Episode 1 Videos

February 18th, 2009

I wanted to document where I’m starting from, so I just fired up my web cam and went with it. I didn’t want to waste a lot of time setting up lights and tripods and mics, so this is kind of raw. But that’s really the fun of this isn’t it? Enjoy!

In the beginning – Story Development

February 18th, 2009

I recorded about 30 minutes of video tonight, me talking to my webcam. How geeky is that right? Well, then again, you’re reading this, so maybe we’re in good company here ;)

Anyway… This is Blog Entry Number 1, for the yet untitled book, about going to Mars. Original concepts almost never make money, so I thought I’d piggy back on some good PR that NASA is cranking out.

I’ll fill you in on the story soon enough, so be sure to check in soon!

Creative Genius at work. Tuned!

… End Transmission …

Bleep!
